ASA Diamond Jubilee Conference 2006
Cosmopolitanism and Anthropology
University of Keele, UK.

The ASA's Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated with its annual conference, in Keele next April.

Main themes:

  1. Anthropology as a cosmopolitan discipline
  2. Normative cosmopolitanism (human rights, global justice, global governmentality, NGOs etc.)
  3. ‘Rooted' Cosmopolitanism
  4. Cosmpolitan spaces (cities, artworlds, pilgrimage centres, factories, mines, etc.)
  5. Elite versus demotic cosmopolitanism (especially in the postcolony)
  6. Cosmopolitan institutions (e.g. museums)
  7. Globalisation, cosmopolitanism and cultural hybridity (migration, diaspora, occupational travellers, pilgrims, popular culture).
  8. Cosmopolitan subjectivity/consciousness

Keynote speakers to include Stuart Hall, Andre Beteille and Elizabeth Colson.
Plenary speakers and chairs: Joel Kahn, Jonathan Friedman, Richard Fardon, Richard Werbner, Chris Hann, Marilyn Strathern, Richard Wilson, Birgit Meyer, Bruce Kapferer, Jonathan Parry, Alan Macfarlane, David Graeber.
